The targets of the Dutch korfball federation can be divided into an international and national target. These are interlinked both direct and indirect with each other. In this research only the national target image is dealt with. The international target image is included for purposes of completeness.
International target image
The KNKV describes an international target image on their website under the section for international korfball. This section includes an international tournaments agenda, an international news section and several other informations on international korfball.
Following is the definition for the international target image for korfball by the KNKV:
“The world wide spread of korfball is of great importance for korfball. Furthermore, successful korfball exportation is also of great importance to Dutch korfball. The image and charisma of korfball can only be related to the international distribution of it throughout the world. This applies to the quantity (number of countries playing, at least fifty by the end of 2007, in five continents) and the quality (level of play in international matches and /or competition) of play. The KNKV faces the additional challenge of introducing korfball to other cultures. “
National target image
The KNKV also devised a national target image for the sport and organisation of the sport of korfball. These goals are summarized by nine focus points for the korfball community. In this section I will name and describe these nine points that have been derived from earlier research.
The target points for the national target image for korfball in the Netherlands described by the KNKV are as described below. Following the focus point you will find a short description of this target.
Strong Clubs
The korfball community would like to be based on strong clubs with a backward position for the national association.
Modern and Entrepreneurial
Korfball should be a modern sport that has an entrepreneurial spirit. Inside the higher coaching ranks this image is already present, but the association would like to strive to achieve this image for the entire sport.
Culturally involved
Korfball players would like to achieve themselves as being culturally involved. The korfball association currently signed a sponsorship deal with “Right to Play” in order to express this goal.
Easy to understand and to get involved
A sport that is easy to understand is easier to get involved in. The IKF and its daughter associations are currently testing several types of rule changes and different forms of korfball in order to make the game more understandable to the general public.
Attractive (sexy, involving) and spectacular
Korfball is an attractive sport that shows spectacular actions. The sport however is not known for these features.
Top sport
Along with top sport should come a climate in which top sport is stimulated and talent should be developed onto its full potential.
Attractive for TV
The KNKV would like to develop korfball to a sport that could be broadcasted to a wide audience on television.
Unique
In many ways this feature has already been achieved, improvement is still a possibility.
Suited for families
Korfball is a sport where families carry a stronghold. The korfball community would like to keep this feature, but would like to weaken the image on this feature by a small amount.
The Dutch korfball federation has said to aim for these targets as a result of the report "Toekomstvisie 2010" which was conducted in assignment of the KNKV and is available at the KNKV office in Zeist.
